Caterpillar, Louisiana Cat work together to rebound from Hurricane Laura
When storms and natural disasters are on the horizon, our teams get to work reaching out to dealers to make sure they have the parts they need to recover after the storm. As Hurricane Laura was strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico, Caterpillar Logistics Analyst, Ashley Althiser contacted Sales Coordinator Melanie St. Pierre at Louisiana Cat. “We have such a good relationship with our dealers. When natural disasters are predicted to occur, we proactively reach out and ask them what they need, so we can work with suppliers, arrange parts and transportation,” said Althiser.
Louisiana Cat had a list of 100 parts they needed including some very large items. Typically, they get one stock shuttle a week, but by pulling orders forward they were able to send two shipments and get them the parts they needed in time. “Melanie and the other employees have their families and homes to worry about,” said Ashley. “If we relieve some of their work worries, I’m happy to help.”
After the storm
Even though there was proactive planning, the storm damage was worse than expected. Several Louisiana Cat branches experienced broken windows and a collapsed roof. “First, we check on our employees’ families and the conditions of their homes. Once that’s established, then we look at our office conditions, determine how can we safely come back and support those that can make it back in,” said Achille Fairchild, Louisiana Cat Sales Manager for Lake Charles and Lafayette. Lake Charles sits between Houston and New Orleans.
Their machine store took the brunt of the storm impact. In the days that followed, damaged products were removed, inventory was checked and a new location for parts was safely secured. “Our parts manager and his team retooled a parts site with new locations and quickly worked with Cat to restore inventory levels,” said Fairchild.
Achille is currently working out of the rental store that suffered minor damage. He and his co-workers relocated there the day after the storm. As for the machine store, they’ve tarped off part of the roof to keep water from coming in, and some service bays have been turned into parts bays because the office and parts department are gutted.
All Part of the Job
“This is part of our job – using common sense, asking what they need and delivering on it. This is a great team effort,” said Client Manager Matt Schreurs. “This is why I do what I do. I love my job and it fills my heart when we’re able to help dealers that’re in tough situations,” said Ashley.
“You see the best in people during trying times. People showed up and proved they’re here to help. The support from Caterpillar and Louisiana Cat has been outstanding and inspiring,” said Fairchild.
An update from Quality Manager, Jarrod Suire:
The Dyno is rapidly changing and beginning to take shape. Water cooler
piping is being laid in place and equipment is being mapped out.
At the same time, the electrical connections and tie-ins are being completed.
Thank you to Operation BBQ Relief and Waters Truck for providing our Lake Charles Teams with lunches!
Congratulations to Stott Wood of Olla, Louisiana, on their purchase of the first Weiler B457 Track Feller Buncher in the State! As one of Hunt Forest Products major hardwood suppliers, the B457 will allow Stott Wood the ability to cut hardwoods year round in soggy terrains that a conventional wheeled feller buncher cannot go. It also has the ability to safely cut storm damaged timber without the use of a traditional saw hand. The Stott Wood team is pictured above with Weiler representatives and Louisiana Cat team:

An update from Technical Services Manager, Greg Andes:
Randy Tyrone, Operator Trainer and Greg held Level II Operator Training for 12 Operators on two different machine families in Reserve on Saturday October 24, 2020.
The 12 operators were members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 478. The Local 478 has jurisdiction over the State of Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama. The IATSE, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada was originally chartered by the American Federation of Labor as the National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees in 1893. Some of the current and former productions they have been involved with include Interview With a Vampire, Claws, Queen Sugar, Queen of the South, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer, and many more blockbuster hits and Television Series!
Among those in attendance were Greensmen, Lead Greensmen, Construction Managers, Set Dressers, and Purchasing Agents. This is the first of a proposed series of training events that will bring the operators’ knowledge and skills to the next level, providing superior value to the partnership. The two machine families that were covered were Backhoe Loaders and Compact Track Loaders.
For each machine family, this training session provided the opportunity for refinement and enhancement of operator skills. All participants successfully completed the course, and received a Certificate of Completion. The follow areas were covered in each of the two machine families during classroom and practical application: Refining operating techniques, Learning application tips and information, Safety and maintenance inspections, Monitoring systems, Control familiarization and applications, Additional supervised equipment operation ("stick time"), Coaching to fine tune experienced operator skills.
This was also a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have available in our Rental Fleet, as much of the equipment they use is short term, rental equipment. We look forward to performing more training with this group, as well as any other of our many customers that stand to benefit from the results of better trained operators using our Equipment Training Solutions modeled Certified Instructor Led Operator Training.

"It's not what Louisiana Cat does, it is what Toni Duhe does. She is outstanding! When I can't find information or I'm not sure how to explain something to her, she goes above and beyond to find the schematics and talks to whoever she has to to make sure I gets the parts that I needs to fix my machine."
- Vern Keeler, V Keeler Associates
Gaining new customers is critical to Louisiana Cat’s success. Inside Sales Reps (ISRs) for Louisiana Cat have not only been beneficial for the
dealership, but also customers. ISR’s field inbound leads from all divisions, companywide. A contributing factor, has been leads received from
our team members on the digital lead form. Our ISR team fielded 36 inbound leads for October thus far, keeping Great+ at the forefront
of each experience. The continued efforts will help grow the business and create new/loyal customers.
While we have been overwhelmed during these unusual times, we ask that you please continue to actively seek new customers and
submit lead forms when you identify any machine or engine rental/sale opportunity. If you need a copy of the lead form or would
like training on how to properly fill it out, please e-mail Steven Crescioni at Steven.Crescioni@LouisianaCat.com.
